WHY  WAWAYANDA?

Or

The story of the TOXIC TIDE

Thus far, our current administration headed by Supervisor Razzano and his all Republican council, have brought the following projects to our town:

  • A proposed car crushing business to Dolsontown Road
  • A gas fueled power plant to Route 6
  • A warehouse complex on Route 6 (Occupants unknown)
  • A possible asphalt plant on Route 6
  • Gas pipelines on Lower road and Route 6.

Why have these projects chosen Our Town? Why are our elected officials trying to tell us these are good rateables? Why has Wawayanda been chosen for projects that will drive down property values? Why are we accepting projects that NO OTHER TOWN will take?

The proposed car crushing business will have machinery that is at least 65 feet high. They will emit tremendous amounts of noise and pollution. Also, Dolsontown Road will accommodate massive truck traffic to and from the site. The proposed power plant will have smoke stacks visible for miles. It will emit pollution in the form of fine particles not captured by filters. It will also produce tremendous amounts of noise as generators are shut down and started up. The proposed warehouse refuses to name its tenants. This means that any type of business can move in without town or planning board approval. This project will be at least 2 to3 times the height of a typical home or business in our town. It will generate much more traffic on local roads and is extremely close to a well-established residential area. The asphalt plant speaks for itself as emissions will pollute our air and create a smell that will be detectable for miles. Although this project has not been discussed yet, the person proposing the plant in Walkill owns land in our town as well. He has been heard on occasion to say that he will bring the plant here. Gas pipelines are not brought to an area without prior research. What do O&R officials and the town board know that we don’t?

These projects will do nothing for this town except decrease property values. Homes and businesses within ½ mile or more of these sites will suffer substantial loss. Who will buy a home or business if you can see, smell, or have to drive within their corridors? The entire town’s property values will suffer as people avoid Wawayanda properties for fear of future projects of this nature. Our homes will be much harder to sell and will sell below market value.

Our town officials keep quoting the same line “We need rateables.” What good are rateables that drive down property values? What good are rateables that pollute our air? What good are rateables that spoil our views and generally decrease our quality of life? What good are rateables that are so constantly noisy that our very health will deteriorate as a result?

Town officials point to the tax money these projects will generate to help off set your taxes. Don’t be fooled by this! School districts are compromised of many towns, not just one. The Minisink School District is compromised of at least 5 towns. This means that any taxes paid by these projects will lower taxes for all, not just Wawayanda. For example if a project pays $500,000 in school taxes, Wawayanda will get a $100,000 decrease ($500,00 divided by 5 towns). This $100,000 would then be further divided by all the homes and businesses within the Wawayanda district. Your vast savings have quickly disappeared. While we suffer all the ill effects of these questionable projects, the other towns will thank us for lowering their taxes and raising their property values.

You deserve better! Call or email Supervisor Razzano and council members Cole, Quinn, Penaluna, and Krajewski and demand better! Demand of our elected officials to stand up and say NO!!!!! to projects that will drive property values down. Demand clean rateables that enhance our property values and quality of life, not drive our lifetime investments into the ground!!!! Demand that they follow the will of those who live in our town. Demand open meetings where projects are discussed fully and openly. Demand that independent panels be set up to deal with any perceived conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to campaign contributors and those that will personally benefit financially by bringing these projects into our town! Don’t let elected officials dictate to those who elected them! Demand that they stand up for you and your quality of life. Their job is to serve the residents of the community in the best way possible way, ethically, morally and legally!!!!!

Please attend the next Town Board Meeting on Thursday, May 8, 2008!!! LET YOUR THOUGHTS BE KNOWN!!!!

It will be too late for Wawayanda when this TOXIC TIDE washes all under!!!!
