Local Roads Become Hazard PDF Print E-mail

LOCAL ROADS TO BECOME HAZARD TO WAWAYANDA RESIDENTS!

Town officials are considering raising the weight limits on our town roads. They plan to raise them to a level above many State and County roads in our area, most of which are only at 10 tons or less. They wish to raise the limits on some roads to 12 Tons (24,000 lbs) and on some roads to 15 Tons (30,000 lbs). Imagine a 12 or 15 ton truck coming down your road at 40+ MPH! This new limit poses a threat to all town residents. Neighboring towns have much less truck weight allowed!!

  • Heavier trucks cannot stop as quickly, leaving children walking to a school bus or a friend’s home at great risk.  Furthermore, ALL pedestrians will be at a much greater risk, especially on roads where there is limited shoulder space and/or no designated area to walk (i.e. a sidewalk).

  • Heavier trucks, especially ones used at construction, excavation, waste or industrial sites, will carry more cargo and thus will have more loose debris being ejected from them into properties, vehicles and even pedestrians or residents causing extensive property damage or injury.

  • A loaded, heavy truck traveling at even moderate speeds will generate a substantial force as it passes by pedestrians, possibly knocking over younger children or causing harm to smaller pets.  Pedestrians will have no means by which to avoid these larger trucks since walking space is already very limited on many of the roads in question.

  • If a truck that size loses control for any reason, it could easily veer onto small residential roads and into homes, destroying them and injuring, maiming or killing its inhabitants.

  • Trucks of this size will put a far greater strain on our roadways. Taxpayers will be forced to repair roads, causing their taxes to rise. The re-construction of these town roads will NOT be paid for by those truck operators!

  • Roads unable to carry the increased weight of these trucks will fall into disrepair and cause accidents and damage to residents' vehicles.

  • Heavier trucks will create substantially more noise. This will destroy the peace and tranquility of residential areas as they rumble through, often in complete unobservance of the posted speed limits as they do on other roads now! They already use their "jake brakes" unconscionably through our hamlets!

  • Heavier trucks will cause more vibrations, causing damage to homes and other structures.

Your voice is needed to stop this from happening!!

The proposed law will have a public hearing on July 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM at town hall. Be there to voice your opinion!! Come let your voice be heard, for without it the only sound you will hear is that of overweight trucks coming down your road.

  • Demand weight limits that remain the same or get substantially reduced.

  • Demand that Councilman Penaluna recuse himself as his family business, Dicks Concrete, will benefit directly from the new law.

  • Demand safe roads with restricted weight and speed limits to protect our town residents, our children and our quality of life.

  • Demand elected officials adhere to the will of the people, not those of special interest groups, who continue to influence all decisions made in this town!

  • Demand a law that works for you, the taxpayer, not the truckers riding (and often speeding recklessly) through our town or the special interests that control our town government's decisions!
